We hear from Frontier how the different elements were constructed and made to sound so authentic…

In F1 Manager 2022, players will step into the role of Team Principal at one of 10 2022 F1® teams to put their name in the sport’s illustrious history books. From designing components and recruiting talented drivers and key staff, to making reactive, data-led decisions on the track, experienced through broadcast quality visuals and audio.

The announcement trailer for F1 Manager 2022 allowed us to highlight the depth of the game’s authenticity at an early stage, calling out specific audio features which are key to Formula 1 and also appear in the game, such as team radio. However, we had to be cognisant of F1's concord rule which means all marketing material needs to include multiple teams. Engine noise for example had to be conceptual so main engine revs are a combination of processed recorded generic road v8 engines and morphing synths, with a bullroarer and animal vocalizations. We wanted to inject topical F1 drama and excitement within a short experience that built tension and anticipation for what players were seeing. Mirroring the moments before the lights go out on the grid and including highlights from the previous season. To achieve this we included recent collision commentary from the start and then interwoven highlights between the sound design from there on out. We used unique instrumentation such as bullroarers, processed Horns glissando, and crowd chants for the climactic ending. Once Jamie had exhausted the bullroarer content, to record a similar effect he put his neighbors on edge recording himself swinging a metal ruler around his head one afternoon in the garden.

F1 Manager 2022 has allowed us to push the boundaries of our internal audio innovation, as part of the game’s development we have analysed over 50,000 raw audio files extracted from F1 legacy broadcast content, and repurposed this to give players and audiences an immersive Formula 1 experience. The team radio which you hear is taken from that authentic broadcast audio, and similar clips are used in the game to allow driver and engineer pairings to respond as they would during an actual race.

Authenticity is at the core of the game’s foundation, which we’ve also placed at the heart of the audio in assets released so far. Our announcement trailer is a perfect example of this, with sound design and dialogue decisions emphasising the sonic character of the sport, even with the inclusion of the pit and engine sound effects in the title music, which adds to the clear and distinct sections so the audience can quickly identify that this is Formula 1.
