Best Composition in Online, Social + Digital Advertising winners this year were Citizen Music in New York for their original tracks on the Under Armour ‘World Cup Armour Up’ spot.
Citizen captured the spirit of the tournament perfectly using innovative sound and powerful lyrics, inspiring and energising audiences. From concept to completion, hear what they had to say about the process of bringing this project to life…
“This all female production team were tasked with working up the concept and creation for the Women’s World Cup. The challenge was to find two female artists in both the UK and US that mirrored Alex Greenfield and Kelley O’Hara, their counterparts on the football field.
Citizen would then create two original tracks, beat swapping between US Hip Hop and UK Grime and contributing lyrics that reflected both the athletes backgrounds and victories. After two months of talent negotiation, we landed on Nadia Rose from the UK and Gavlyn from the US.
In close collaboration with the Under Armour teams, production, and the agency, staff composers, Theo de Gunzburg and Noah Wiehl, wrote original tracks for the choreographer to work to. The team then joined on set to make last minute tweaks and recorded the talent in the studio. During the edit we meticulously worked on sound design and sweetened everything in the end through the mix.”

2024’s Best Original Composition in a Feature Film went to composer Stuart Hancock for his sweeping, soul-stirring ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ score.
Starring the voices of Cillian Murphy, Sally Hawkins and Aaron MacGregor, with Ken Watanabe as Kensuke, ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ is the new hand-drawn animated feature film from Lupus Films, based on the beloved Michael Morpurgo children’s book of the same name.
Let’s hear how Hancock helped bring this project to life with his music…
After a long period of development and financing, “Kensuke’s Kingdom” was finally greenlit into pre-production in the summer of 2020, with the bulk of production and animation taking place during the challenging circumstances of the pandemic.
With around 74 minutes’ worth of music across the film’s 84-minute run-time, Stuart Hancock’s symphonic score plays a crucial role in the unfolding of the narrative, given the minimal dialogue between castaway characters Michael and Kensuke. The visuals and music take time to breathe and gain breadth, transforming the survival of the two leads into a deeply moving human story. It’s a proper adventure score in the traditional sense, full of action and excitement, but at the same time it’s extremely gentle – like the film – with a complex emotional core.
The music was recorded with the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra (in various ensemble sizes up to 60 players), together with the Holst Singers and various solo musicians (including the composer on piano) recorded at Air-Edel Studios in London.
A central flashback sequence in the movie gives us Kensuke’s origin story and a depiction of the demise of Nagasaki, for which Stuart made an epic choral arrangement of the haunting Japanese folksong “Sakura Sakura”. 8-year-old Kotoko Wertheim delivers a poignant vocal solo as part of this sequence. Other cues required a musical chant for Kensuke to summon the island’s orang-utans. The notes of the chant motif creep in subliminally in the orchestral score as soon as Michael is washed up on the beach, establishing the island setting as a character in itself. Stuart had the pleasure of recording the singing of actor Ken Watanabe (remotely in Tokyo) for the chant proper, and it returns later in the movie as an emotional duet between Kensuke and Michael (voiced by 11-year-old Aaron MacGregor).
Not only did Hancock win the MASA but also Best Original Music at Mon Premier Festival and Best Music at the recent British Animation Awards, where it also won Best Writing and Best Feature Film.
Author Michael Morpurgo is on record as declaring this his favourite film adaptation of any of his work, and feels it’s even better than his original book!
Congratulations once again Stuart.

The inaugural Music+Sound Awards Best Original Composition in a Feature-Length Documentary was won by Bleeding Fingers’ Anže Rozman for his beautiful score on Netflix’s Secret of the Neanderthals.
Anže discusses here the creation of the score and explains how the music was designed to evoke the humanity of Neanderthals and connect audiences to their ancient world. From recording in the legendary Divje Babe Caves to incorporating authentic instruments and sounds, we can appreciate the artistry behind this captivating score even more…
“For the score it was very important to us to be able to translate to the audience that Neanderthals were much more like us Homo Sapiens than we ever thought. They were human like us. They cared for each other and potentially had their own language, art and religion.
In September of 2021 we travelled to my home country of Slovenia to record a replica of the “Divje Babe” Neanderthal flute in the Grand Hall of the Postojna Cave.
The original flute, which is made out of a cave bear tibia bone was found in the Divje Babe Caves and is the oldest instrument to have ever been found and key scientists believe it is of Neanderthal origin.
Slovenian woodwind player Boštjan Gombač has an exact replica made out of a brown bear tibia bone and this replica was used for the recording in the magical cave chamber with its mystical 11s reverb.
We also recorded rocks, stalagmites, conch shells, stomps, frame drums and claps. These sounds were used throughout the score, and we believe they helped transport the audience back in time and connect them with our Neanderthal sisters and brothers.”

With the title music for Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, composer Jeff Toyne blew the jury away. Here Toyne tells us how he crafted the music to complement the show’s visual style and create a vibrant and original score that gives a taster of what’s to come in this brilliant production.
“Palm Royale required a unique musical style that would fuse legendary 60’s musical influences like Henry Mancini and Bernard Herrmann with a Latin twist, and a thematic richness that evolves throughout the show. The use of specific instruments like Chromatic Harmonica, Autoharp, Contrabass and Eb Clarinet, not to mention 21-piece big band combined with large orchestra paid homage to these vibrant sounds. The visual authenticity and detail on-screen was matched with live musician performances. I endeavoured to create music that enhanced the show’s sonic identity and developed key themes for characters. The intricate Latin flavour woven into the score, with percussion and rhythmic transformations, accompanied by vocals inspired by Yma Sumac and the Swingle Singers, reflects the show’s mix of comedy and drama.”
It’s clear to see why he won!

Best Original Composition in a Video Game (Gameplay) was won this year by composer Jon Everist for his exhilarating score on pulp adventure, ‘The Lamplighters League’.
Recorded with full orchestra at historic Abbey Road Studios Studio 1, The Lamplighters League original soundtrack is a unique and compelling mix of 90’s action-film pulp with a light sprinkling of jazz noir. The music effortlessly flows between a stealthy infiltration mode where a complex music system changes the solo accompaniments depending on which character you’re controlling (played by virtuoso Kristin Naigus), and explodes into a rousing larger-than-life adventure during combat sections when ‘going loud’ is your only option.
Jon is a multi award-winning composer for games and film, writing music for franchises such as Overwatch 2, Shadowrun and PUBG as well as Mike Bithell’s The Solitaire Conspiracy.
Looks like the industry agrees with the jury’s pick…
IGN
“The tone, the characters, and the villains all really nail the appeal of the genre, as does composer Jon Everist’s characteristically superb soundtrack.”
Eurogamer
“The Lamplighters League’s gorgeously evocative art style and sultry, swinging soundtrack perfectly capturing the globetrotting, rip-roaring spirit of the classic adventure genre in its heyday.”
Ars Technica
“I greatly enjoyed Jon Everist’s scores for previous Harebrained Schemes games and have absolutely no complaints here.”
XboxHub
“The soundtrack is amazing and once again plays as a brilliant homage to the pulp fiction action adventure journey.”
EmpireOnline
“It weaves a gloriously pulpy adventure with high stakes and higher thrills, all elevated by great voice acting and rousing music throughout.”
Xbox Era
“Pros: incredible music. The soundtrack is fantastic. It helps make a smaller, focused title feel like something wonderous. A long, varied, and constantly wonderful orchestral soundtrack pumps through every menu and combat encounter with a quality normally only found in the biggest budget titles.”

This year’s MASA Best Composition in a Film Trailer winner was Acid Music for William Arcane’s chilling music on the Cuckoo Official Trailer.
Acid Music take us behind the scenes and we hear how the music was crafted to create a truly terrifying cinematic experience…
“For Tilman Singer’s extraordinary sophomore feature for NEON, Acid Music were commissioned by award-winning trailer agency AV Squad to create an entire score that would blow audiences away.
The challenge was to create intrigue as we are introduced to Hunter Schafer’s character plunged into the unsettling environment of Herr Konig’s mysteriously empty Alpine hotel. Composer William Arcane worked over a number of months to create specific pods for the development of the story and deftly used jarring electronic stabs to create an almost Cronenberg style 80’s horror feel to compliment the elevated terrifying imagery of the film. After many revisions and micro music production techniques, the resulting soundtrack complimented the edit’s narrative resulting in viral sensation when it was released, with horror fans desperate to see the film.”
A brilliant score. A driving force that pulls you into the film’s mind-bending, unsettling world. Well done to all involved!

Aleksandra (Sasha) is a Latvian composer, multi-award-winning singer-songwriter, and pianist. Influenced by her background as a vocalist, her music often incorporates voice into its instrumentation. Her compositions are frequently synth-based, hybrid, modern, and experimental.
Check out the reel above that won her 2024’s COMPOSER RISING STAR!
Here Aleksandra shares a little about what went into each project…
‘Snowbunny’ directed by Daniel Rands – the score for this film was recorded at the renowned Air Studios, using the NFTS orchestra. The music function of this film is to bring the viewer’s attention into the protagonist’s head and to show the full palette of feelings he is experiencing towards his suddenly re-appeared love interest and towards his place in the society.
‘Us Four’ directed /animated by Alex Peake – For this animated documentary project, it was essential to reflect on and musically emphasize the playful, girly and fun relationship between the four sisters, as well as the cherished memories they share. The ‘Nanana’ song serves as a thematic anchor, with each sister’s voice representing a distinct perspective, led by the main voice of the oldest sister. In a personal touch, the final credits of the film feature the voices of my two daughters, aged 4 and 5, lending an intimate and relatable quality to the film. By incorporating the voices of the next generation of sisters, I sought to highlight the universality of sibling relationships and the ever-changing nature of childhood memories. Just as the ‘Nanana’ song evolves with each stage of life, so too will the bonds between these sisters as they grow and mature.
‘Harvest’ directed by Sophia Seymour – award winning documentary short film exploring the theme of motherhood and societal pressure for women to have children. Conflicted about Motherhood, the director addresses the taboo subject of not wanting children with others at her local swimming pool. All, whilst undergoing the gruelling emotional process of freezing her eggs to insure against the risk of changing her mind. Being a mother myself, this score came naturally to me, as all the themes and questions I have experienced myself are reflected in my music. The score is primarily based on my own voice, synth and processed harmonica.
‘Tapeworm’ directed by Daniel Rands – this score was captured live at Air Studios in London, featuring the NFTS orchestra. Post-recording, the music underwent extensive processing and heavy distortion to authentically convey the visceral, gritty, and sinister atmosphere of the underground car park, where the brutal world of human gambling unfolds. A distinctive ‘rattling snake’ synth sound emerged as the thematic motif representing the inner turmoil of the main protagonist, Worm. She endeavours to escape her circumstances by secretly pocketing betting money but finds herself caught by her boss, compelling her to wager the stolen funds on a high-stakes game. When her player is gravely injured, she selflessly takes his place, exposing herself to danger once more, as underscored by the haunting cimbasso and trombone theme, plunging us back into darkness.
Dry Peaches – this is a film about a human-robot relationship and it was important for me to create a ‘human-robot’ music dance, whilst also developing the robot theme into a very emotional ending where we discover that the robot might actually be able to feel and is grieving the loss of the human race and her ‘owner’. The beginning of the film score is very heavily synth-based, but as soon as we start to ‘feel’ beautiful violin-voice theme cuts through, slowly revealing what this film is actually about.
This is what Snowbunny director, Daniel Rands, had to say about working together,
“Aleksandra is the definition of a true collaborator. She approaches projects without ego and is always able to convert my sometimes abstract direction into beautiful, moving and apt score. I am always impressed by how much of herself she gives to her work, and am yet to find anything she is unable to deliver on.”
High praise, indeed. Great talent with a wonderful career ahead of her.

The phenomenal success of ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ by Sophie Ellis-Bextor 20 years after it was first released, following its inclusion in the final scene of ‘Saltburn’ has been the biggest talking point in the sync world, and beyond, this year.
It’s no surprise then that the Music Supervisor behind all of this, Kirsten Lane, was our incredibly worthy 2024 winner for Best Sync in a Feature Film.
Lane, founder of Right Music Ltd, has been licensing music for films and TV for over 25 years. She started out at PolyGram Records, then worked for PolyGram Films, and finally Sony/ATV Music Publishing, before setting up Right Music Ltd in 2001.
The tongue-in-cheek use of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s hit, with Oliver dancing through the Saltburn house at the end of the film in the buff (his modesty protected due to rating rules in below clip!), claiming the place as his own, set TikTok on fire, with memes and millions of plays and uploads of others copying the trend.
The song went back into the charts in the UK at Number 2 and has enabled Sophie to finally break the US market with a recent tour there. Now everyone wants their Saltburn / Murder on the Dancefloor moment!
This placement is going to be talked about for a long time yet. Congratulations once again Kirsten!

Zoë Ellen Bryant and Pete Saville from Carbon Logic took home the Music+Sound Award for Best Sync in Film / TV Titles this year for their inspired use of Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” in the titles for Amazon Prime’s thriller, Wilderness.
What they had to say about the project…
“It was decided early on that Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” was the PERFECT track for the Wilderness titles. Without giving too much away for those who haven’t watched the series, main character Liv is betrayed by her husband, and driven to behaviour most women would never dare indulge in. Like Taylor Swift, Liv takes no prisoners.
The lyrics “look what you made me do” repeatedly remind us of Liv’s dilemma within the Wilderness story. The song’s themes – being made a fool of, getting smarter / harder when she needs to, revenge, survival and victory – couldn’t be more relevant. We also hear “Look What You Made Me Do” in episode two, at a point where Liv’s fire for revenge has been further stoked.
However – perfection of track aside – the idea for its inclusion in Wilderness came at a time when there was no licensable master recording of Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do”… This was due to Taylor having lost control of the master recordings for her first six albums, and blocking any use of them via the publishing side.
Although famously in the process of re-recording said albums, Taylor had not yet reached “Reputation”, on which “Look What You Made Me Do” features… So, lengthy discussions with Universal, Republic Recordings, Taylor’s management and brother Austin (who manages aspects of her licensing) ensued, to see if it was possible to prioritise a re-record of “Look What You Made Me Do” in time for the Wilderness mix dates. Suffice to say, it all worked out, and we are incredibly grateful for the support and effort from Taylor and her team. Quite a feat.”

LinkedIn ‘Find Your In’
For this spot, we knew we needed something grand, joyful, and a little bit quirky to choreograph the dance to. Racing against the clock, this spot was shot with a different song before we landed on Guerilla by Remi Wolf. Droga’s music team pitched this song in the first round, it was an instant favorite but the team kept on pushing to see if we could beat it. We cast a broad net for quirky tracks with big hits in a range of languages, genres, and decades. The more options we tried, the more the team fell in love with the way that the track captured the young girl’s energy and the overall weirdness and imagination of the spot.

This is a very unique boxing advertisement that shows no violence, but it’s this deep cut unexpected cover of a known song that captivates the viewer and adds unique intensity. 750mph tell us about the intricate process of creating the immersive sound design that won them this year’s Best Sound Design in Broadcast Advertising with Jake Ashwell and Sam Ashwell’s audio on the Formula E ‘It’s on’ spot.
Read on to hear of the job’s challenges and triumphs. You can see and hear from watching it how the unique sonic experience they created complements the thrilling visuals of the sport perfectly
“The goal of the spot was to create a bespoke sound design mix to complement the picture and enhance the narrative of the spot, and to build excitement for the 2024 Formula E World Championship. Our challenge was to not only create from scratch the sound of the shop shaking and rattling, but also balance that with the bespoke commentary, the unique sound of the electric race cars, and the music track which we edited to work with the picture. We needed to create a soundtrack to drive the pace of the film. Every sound was built for each specific moment, creating the environment for the space or vignette.
Most of the sound you hear was created specifically for the film through either sound design, foley or manipulation of SFX. The only sounds that were not were the sounds of the car itself. We were supplied with car sounds but the brief from the client and the agency were to push the sounds on as the actual sound of the car wasn’t hugely pleasant. They wanted it to sound more techy and si-fi so we augmented the original sound and layered them with other sounds also adding sound effects.”
Congratulations once again!

Zelig Sound were our big winners this year of Best Sound Design in Online, Social + Digital Advertising (Sponsored by Sound Canvas) with their work on the Aston Martin Vantage ‘Engineered for Real Drivers’ spot.
Harry Smith + Matthew James’ ground-breaking sound design creates a sonic experience that perfectly complements the car’s power and elegance. Discover below how the team managed to create an award-worthy, truly immersive, audio experience…
“Created entirely in CGI, the film creates an authentic portrayal of the thrill of driving an Aston Martin, engineered for real drivers.
Our sound design and music are designed to articulate the power of the car as the Vantage comes together before our eyes, balancing the purity and precision of the car forming. First out of glass, then transmogrifying into the full, powerful, weighted luxury of the Vantage. The sound highlights the car’s stability, speed, and precision engineering, reaching a crescendo of explosive energy when, finally, the car has been fully built and driven off by Alonso.
The task was to depart from the traditional regal British Bond-esque vibe. The result is a more modern, electronic interpretation of the brand, using distorted synths and driving percussion to represent the car’s story, its power, engineering prowess and driving experience.
The pure CGI film necessitated sound design to ground the concept in reality, suspending the viewer’s disbelief, while maintaining authenticity and power. This gave us a lot of freedom and expression but simultaneously, the engine RPMs, tire peels and vibrations all had to feel very real, correct and, on the limit.”

750mph got their second win this year for Sam Ashwell’s faultless mix on the Riyadh Season – Fury vs. Ngannou spot.
This is what they had to say about the project…
“The trailer offers an exhilarating insight into the intense preparation and rivalry between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou before their highly-anticipated crossover match in Riyadh. Utilizing meticulous sound design, the trailer vividly portrays their superhero-like strength, underscoring the power and prowess of the fighters. The meticulously crafted sound effects, including thunderous blows and shattering impacts, accentuate the larger-than-life persona of the athletes, effectively heightening the drama of the event. This impactful sound design is seamlessly balanced with what feels like a very feminine musical score, further enhancing the trailer’s emotional depth and amplifying the anticipation for this sport’s spectacle.
The brief was to create a bespoke sound design mix to complement the picture and enhance the narrative of the spot. The challenge was to create a soundtrack to drive the pace of the film. Every sound was built for each specific moment, creating the environment for the space or vignette.
Every single sound you hear was created specifically for the film through either sound design, foley or manipulation of SFX. A huge part of the challenge with the sound design for this project was balancing out the music SFX and foley alongside the music to make the final mix work in equilibrium. Their mix for this was heavily influenced by a back-and-forth with the editor during the post process. This helped to create rhythms and musicality through the spot.”
It’s a masterpiece

Zelig’s second 2024 Music+Sound Awards win was for their sonic branding for US streaming service, TUBI. Here they let us in on their creative process…
“Our bright, playful sonic rebrand sets TUBI, the most-watched free TV and movie streaming service in the U.S, apart from rival streamers by using not just characterful sound design but the streamer’s own, distinctive name as the sonic hook.
The use of contrasting bold sounds and stereo panning (the purple and yellow) articulating the portal concept of the logo animation, emphasising the idea of passing through the radically different “rabbit holes” that TUBI is known for as viewers switch, Alice-in-Wonderland style, from one world of entertainment to the other.
The brief was to craft a unique and unforgettable mnemonic essential for establishing a globally recognisable and trusted entertainment destination. We wanted to differentiate TUBI from its competitors (none of them use their name or voice!), lean into its youthful demographic and its broad unique content offering. We were able to push this creatively, gravitating towards a unique playful vocal approach putting the word TUBI front and centre, with the two percussive-like syllables processed and manipulated connecting the name with the motion and visual identity.”

When filmmaker Jonathan Glazer sent sound designer Johnnie Burn the script for his Holocaust drama, ‘The Zone of Interest’, a year before production even began, Glazer laid down clear guidelines for the role sound was going to play: He did not want to share images that audiences knew and he wasn’t going to show the familiar, devastating scenes of the German concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. He wanted to reflect everything through SOUND.
The Oscar-nominated film centers around Commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Huller) who live a dream life with their children in a seemingly-perfect home — except that the house and garden border a concentration camp.
The film was approached two ways: Johnnie Burn says “We saw it as being two films: one you see, and one you hear. We made the family drama film without any sound, and Jon and I spent five months deciding where to apply the sound of the camp.”
His MASA was one of many awards for Johnnie. ‘The Zone Of Interest’ was one of this year’s leading awards contenders, with BAFTA and Oscar wins specifically for sound.
Congratulations once again. The sound plays such a vital role in conveying this film’s chilling message.

The sound team at Formosa Group took home the Music+Sound Award this year for Best Sound Design in TV for their groundbreaking work on The Continental: From the World of John Wick.
Let’s hear how they brought this iconic world to life through sound…
“This was a very sound-intensive show, especially for a more broadcast style of show with broadcast resources. Though there were only 3 episodes, each episode was around 90min, and treated a little more like a movie than a show.
The action needed to sound like action of the John Wick world. I like to call it precision violence. We want each moment to be heard and have its own impact. These fights and action scenes are so well choreographed, it’s important we do our job with sound to help tell this story with sound. And that can be seconds, of even frames at a time. If it’s not precise and carefully crafted, it can get messy, and unfocused quickly, and the audience won’t be able to experience the story and action the way it’s meant to be interpreted. So we create this hyperreal, graphic novel action, that feels natural.
The director Albert also added his own style to the show with his filmmaking. It’s very edgy, and has a totally different flare than what’s done in the John Wick movies. Lots of transitional design, subjective moments, and blackness as Albert calls it (working in black frames) that requires sound to tell the story. It is fun, edgy, and pops out, grabbing you for a different immersive experience. It’s very bold and stylistic.
We got to do a lot of sound design with music for this series. Some of it was with the composer, like a thematic pulse we came up with. They also scored to heli blades we made. However, where we did a ton of sound design to music, was with almost all of the needle drops (the wonderful songs of the 70’s) – and the show is packed with them. Most of the time, filmmakers just turn the sound effects way down while the needle drops play, but Albert wanted it to be immersive, and having sound design to these needle drops helped a bunch to achieve that. The post production department actually shared a live spread sheet with me that updated every time a song was licensed (approved). That’s when I knew we could design to it. My favorite was “One (Is the Loneliest Number)” by Three Dog Night. It’s in Night 3, Mel Gibson’s character Cormac is riding in a unique elevator (I wont spoil it). We made the elevator gears and mechanical movement clank along to the electric keyboard. When he gets out we have some fun, gigantic footsteps. He’s in a hidden area in the walls, where pipes are running. We used the steam running through the pipes to create a false rise with the phrase of the song, then grow to the opening of a door. They play so well together, it really works to elevate this fun moment.
In Night 1 we have environmental elements playing along to a Satana song. A person shaking a salvation army bell to it, a subway horn rising with a long sustained organ chord, with the subway’s doors and hydraulics all playing in rhythm with the song. It was a lot of fun to create.
The dialog/ADR work for the show was very involved. There was a lot of dialog cleanup and smoothing, but also a fair amount of ADR and Group ADR recorded.
We had to record almost all of one main character’s lines. Jenkins. He was very mumbly and had a thick southern accent. It was very hard to understand what he said, so most of his lines are ADR. We also had to re-record almost all of the character Yen’s English lines as she was just starting to learn English at the time. In addition to that, we had to re-record all Vietnamese lines by the English actors to capture the correct pronunciations.
Then we needed to record fighting efforts for almost all of the main characters, as well as the henchmen/bad guys. There’s quite a few fights in the show, especially for a broadcast show.
We also recorded a lot of group ADR. The director wanted the show and world to be very experiential and immersive, and that was helped greatly by putting a lot of group actors in the environments, especially in and around New York City. We did Group ADR for most of the henchmen/bad guys throughout the show. The show runner actually wrote a lot of specific lines for Group ADR background and henchmen characters.”

We were really excited to introduce the Best Voice Performance in a Video Game category this year, and it did not disappoint. The response was overwhelming and our winners BRILLIANT!
Congratulations once again to the sound teams at Insomniac Games and PlayStation Studios for their triumph with voice artist, Nadji Jeter’s, portrayal of Miles Morales in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2!
Here they tell us a little about the development of the project…
“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was a launch pad for audio experimentation and innovation. With two heroes, one alien symbiote, and the power of the PS5 at our whim, we set out to deliver an emotionally charged sonic experience. (No pressure)
Spider-Man 2 had an epic story arc that our team needed to support as it followed Peter’s decent into alien symbiosis, Harry’s (almost) demise and Miles’ and MJ’s collaboration – which kept everything from imploding. The tension in the narrative was reflected in the audio and inspired by the actors’ performances.
We created distinct signature sounds for Miles Morales based on his physicality and animation style. Miles’ unique bio-electric powers meant using designed elements, synths, and abstract tones. Miles has an almost musical quality to his sound palette that reflects his character, and an individual set of kinetic foley.
Having a story of this scope and with this many factions and missions meant our mix was going to need time. We started mixing a year out from delivery and used 2 mix rooms in the final months. We set up systems in Wwise to streamline the process as much as possible, while still staying flexible enough to handle whatever changes came our way. Weekly mix sessions became daily sessions as our delivery date approached. Our audio leads and production managers kept our wellbeing in mind throughout the process as well. It was a Rubik’s Cube of scheduling.
Lastly, our sound design and mix decisions around cinematics were made with the intension of cohesiveness. We wanted the transitions in and out of cinematics to be as seamless as possible. Close collaboration with our music team, cinematic sound designers, and gameplay sound designers made this a reality. We put everything we knew into this game and hopefully that is evident in the final product.”
It certainly is!

Isaac Matus from Wave Studios was named the 2024 Sound Designer Rising Star by the Music+Sound Awards jury.
Starting at Wave New York as a runner at the end of 2018, Bogotá-born Isaac quickly moved his way up to Transfer Engineer, and now Sound Designer and Mixer. He’s since worked with major brands such as Budweiser, New York Life, Nissan, Bubly and Icy Hot to name a few, plus multiple short films and music videos.
It was his work on a campaign for Toronto’s major paediatric teaching hospital, SickKids, though that convinced the jury. This milestone work in his portfolio involved intricate sound design, paired with otherworldly VFX, a touching message, along with a Billie Eilish song he had to edit. The film demonstrates the power of Precision Child Health, and early diagnosis, in transforming the outcomes in paediatric healthcare.
Isaac and the team leveraged sound as storytelling shorthand to propel the narrative and create an enticing, sonic world of PCH that illustrated how it enabled SickKids doctors and researchers to search the past, analyse the present, and heal the future of SickKids patients. They used sound design to serve as an auditory indication of what was happening in the story, such as preempting visuals with tell-tale sounds — like rattling wheels of a gurney and the urgent voices in the hospital corridors. They also made the sound of PCH a key element of the soundscape, giving it an unexpected and very specific sonic character. Heavily treated vocals were utilised that felt synthesised, while subconsciously still human, and the sound of organic elements, digitally formatted to create something new, much like the process of PCH itself.
Take a look again and see how his talent shines through. We really look forward to following Isaac’s future work

Joseph Bell at E.A.R Studios in London tells us all about the project and we see how the music was crafted to evoke emotion, authenticity, and the spirit of the North East…
“We were approached to adapt this anthem of the North East to celebrate the renewal of the iconic relationship between Newcastle United FC & Adidas.
The project began in January 2024 when the agency, The Midnight Club, approached us to write the score for the mood film, as part of their campaign pitch. We were to reimagine Geordie Ridley’s poem ‘The Blaydon Races’. This poem and regular chant on the terraces of St James’ Park carried such weight. The film was going to have a raw and personal theme, so the music needed to reflect this, stay true to the original, and appeal to an audience of people most likely to imbibe this ad online.
Placing the very much upbeat original into a minor key, slowing it down by 60 bpm, using a mixture of synths, sound design, heavy percussion, layers of voices (be that our neighbor, ourselves, our wives, whoever we could get in that week), and a beautiful but haunting female vocal performance, both solo and ensemble, we managed to match the powerful mood edit put together by the agency and contribute to them winning the campaign.
Fast forward to Spring, and it was time to do it for real. The client didn’t want to move much from the mood score so this brief was all about enhancing something that was already more or less over the line.
Firstly, real epic drums were recorded, layers and layers of them. The rushed synth work of the first film was replaced, and also enhanced by a more careful & thoughtful approach. Crucially we were able to replace all of the vocals: the chanted accompanying vocals were sung firstly by the flag waving crowd seen in the ad – again layers upon layers, and also by the Felling Male Voice Choir – a group of singers based up in that part of the world who also feature in the film and were genuinely magical to work with. They were also able to offer more layers to the more sensitive musical elements, as well as choral backing throughout.
Finally a Geordie up-and-coming superstar called Heidi Curtis was bought in and she lifted the sound with her beautiful but commanding performance. These three groups of singers added a layer of authenticity – integral to a re-record of ‘The Blaydon Races’.
Once all was in place and mixed this sounded better than we had imagined it would do back in January. Unexpectedly for an online ad release the score has generated a lot of interest. Of course this is down mostly to it being a rewrite of a brilliant piece of North Eastern heritage. But through the emotion, feel, and relationship to the film, the composition has played a part too.”

These were 2 of 3 films in a music-led campaign we launched during the Grammy’s. Each film was a true story and all 3 films were worked on simultaneously around the clock for 6 weeks. We provided over 20 rounds of tracks for each film while doing our own edits to picture, getting new directions/re-briefed nearly daily, and checking licensing costs for any liked tracks.
